Oxford Nanopore sequences DNA with a nanopore. Founded in 2005 out of Oxford, they productized decades of research & launched MinION in 2014/2015; I remember using it for an early-access program. Now they are moving into long-read & expanding surveillance applications.

A nanopore, bacterial or solid-state, can detect voltages changes when DNA is passed through it. So under the right conditions a unique electrical signal for the 4 nucleotides can be picked up. ONT has refined base-calling & chemistry to bring their accuracy closer to parity.

MinION is a handheld brought into the field, while GridION/PromethION have higher throughput & longer read lengths. With well over $200M in revenue (a lot from COVID surveillance), ONT created a new category in genomics. Finding use cases in mobile testing, genotyping & more.
