BioRender, founded in 2017 & led by Shiz Aoki, has grown into a market-leader for scientific illustrations. Improving scientific communication. Used seemingly by every immunologist & microbiologist, BioRender is a under-the-radar success story in biotech SaaS.

The key part of the product is the library of >50K scientifically-accurate icons & >5K templates, designed by illustrators. Shiz had been a lead science illustrator at National Geographic, started her own studio & requests for science figures seeded the idea for BioRender.

Now BioRender helps scientists make figures & also posters, 3D images, and expanding into new fields as their library of icons/templates grows. The standard tools for scientific figures has been Adobe/Powerpoint, and the lack of standards makes formatting an constant frustration.
