Axial: https://linktr.ee/axialxyz
Axial partners with great founders and inventors. We invest in early-stage life sciences companies such as Appia Bio, Seranova Bio, Delix Therapeutics, Simcha Therapeutics, among others often when they are no more than an idea. We are fanatical about helping the rare inventor who is compelled to build their own enduring business. If you or someone you know has a great idea or company in life sciences, Axial would be excited to get to know you and possibly invest in your vision and company . We are excited to be in business with you - email us at info@axialvc.com
Microscopy has been a driving force for breakthrough discoveries in biology from how cells divide to how proteins interact with each other. And it has historically attracted unique characters over the centuries like Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek, the Janssens, and Douglas Prasher. The field has undergone rapid acceleration over the last 2 decades with the advent of super-resolution microscopy, which allows imaging of the cell beyond the diffraction limit of light. These are some of the best people in microscopy. Email info@axialvc.com if there are others to add to the group:
Luke Lavis - the leading inventor for fluorescent imaging dyes. As Head of Molecular Tools and Imaging at Janelia Farm, his group invents new fluorogenic tools to enable super-resolution imaging.
Eric Betzig - won the Nobel Prize in 2014 for inventing super-resolution microscopy. After grad school, Eric worked at Bell Labs and actually started his own company in 2002 where he developed PALM.
Brian English - is a senior scientist at Janelia working with Luke Lavis. He helped invented the Janelia Fluor series of dyes and continues his pioneering work.
Jonathan Grimm - he also works with Brian and Luke as a senior scientist. Having invented the Janelia Fluor as well, Jonathan also developed a method to create dyes that cover the entire spectral range.
Anne Carpenter - senior director of the Imaging Platform at Broad Institute as well as an institute scientist. Anne is the leader for extracting insights from large sets of biological images. She led the development of Cell Painting and also sits on the SAB of Recursion Pharmaceuticals.
Kevin Dean - was a 2-time All-American running back and is a leader in light-sheet microscopy. Making tools to study cancer and rare metastatic colonization.
Xavier Darzacq - develops new ways to image single-molecules in living cells and embryos. His work has elucidated the function of Cajal bodies, polymerases, and RNA.
Xiaowei Zhuang - her group does some of the most beautiful and technically mind-blowing research around super-resolution microscopy. From entire chromosomes to single neurons in living animals.
Mark Schnitzer - creates optics to image neural ensembles in live mice & fruit flies. And establishing new frameworks for learning and long-term memory formation.
Jason Cyster - creatively uses fluorescence microscopy & two-photon imaging to study immune cell trafficking. Spanning chemokines, antigen recognition, germinal centers, and more.
